Hi everyone,
I’m a Chinese national currently planning a long-term migration strategy for my family. I would really appreciate some realistic advice from people who have actually lived, worked, or navigated the immigration systems in New Zealand, Australia, or Canada.
I’m not looking for a general “which country is best” debate. Instead, I’m trying to figure out which path is the most realistic for my specific background, age, and family situation.
My Background
- Nationality: Chinese citizen
- Age: Late 30s (I know this is a critical factor for points-based systems)
- Experience: ~16 years of professional experience in the civil infrastructure sector.
- Education:
- Diploma in Road & Bridge Engineering Technology
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Technology (recent top-up degree)
- Core Expertise: I am more of a civil infrastructure commercial/contracts/cost professional than a pure civil engineer or software developer. My day-to-day involves:
- Highway / road infrastructure projects (including international projects)
- Quantity surveying / cost estimation / BOQ / cost control
- Commercial management & Contract administration (Heavy focus on FIDIC contracts)
- Variations / claims / payment / final accounts
- Engineering surveying
- English: Workable for professional communication, but I am actively preparing for IELTS/PTE to maximize my immigration points and local employability.
Family & Long-Term Vision
- Married with a 1-year-old child.
- The Goal: We plan for our child to receive their early education in China and potentially move to an English-speaking country around age 12–15 for high school.
- Ideally, the whole family would already have stable Permanent Residency (PR) by that time, allowing us to move together rather than sending the child abroad alone.
What I’m Considering
1. New Zealand
- Pathways: Green List / Skilled Migrant Category. Roles like Quantity Surveyor or Construction Project Manager.
- Pros: the lifestyle, natural environment, and work-life balance. It seems like a great place to raise a family.
- Cons/Concerns: The job market is relatively small. I’m also worried if NZQA will give me a hard time assessing my qualifications since my Diploma (Civil) and Bachelor’s (CS) are in completely different fields.
2. Australia
- Pathways: 189/190/491 Skilled Migration, or Employer-Sponsored (482/186).
- Pros: A massive construction and infrastructure pipeline with much higher income potential.
- Cons/Concerns: Age point deductions, fierce competition, and the strict skills assessment process (e.g., VETASSESS or AIQS) given my mixed educational background.
3. Canada
- Pathways: Express Entry (STEM/Trades draws) or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP). Roles like Construction Estimator.
- Pros: A larger economy and proximity to the US. Good career mobility.
- Cons/Concerns: The CRS score cut-offs are currently sky-high, my age will penalize my score heavily, and the current immigration policies seem very unpredictable.
My Priorities (in order of importance):
- Realistic chance of obtaining Permanent Residency (PR)
- Ability to find work in my existing profession (Contracts/Commercial/QS) without starting entirely from scratch
- Long-term stability and good public education for my child
- Reasonable work-life balance
- Career and income potential
- Housing affordability and cost of living
My Questions for this Sub: For someone with my profile in 2026, which country would you target and why?
I’d especially appreciate insights on two strategies:
- Option A: Go directly to the country that offers the best immediate career/PR outcome.
- Option B: Target New Zealand first for stability and PR, and potentially keep Australia as a fallback using the NZ/AU pathways down the line.
Would love to hear from: Civil engineers, quantity surveyors, contract managers, or anyone who successfully migrated to these countries in their late 30s/early 40s. Real-world insights on employment prospects, qualification recognition, and family life are vastly preferred over migration-agent marketing.
Thanks in advance for your time and advice!
