( I mean owning a house, a car, and taking two vacations a year. I've been told that while a middle-class lifestyle is achievable in China, it's still incredibly difficult for ordinary people; in contrast, it's much easier to achieve in Japan.

What does modern Japan offer that modern China lacks? Why choose to leave at the peak of society? Are these people politically motivated, or is it simply impossible for them to enter the middle class and enjoy the benefits of Chinese society, such as owning a house, a car, or supporting a family? Political freedom doesn't mean much if you're starving. I'd rather have a house, a car, and one or two vacations a year than political freedom, you know what I mean?

That's what I'm asking. The situation isn't like it was fifty years ago; China is still poor and following outdated communist economic policies.

What's preventing them from starting their own companies and running their own businesses in China? Isn't China the country best positioned to do this? After all, it has such a massive manufacturing sector. Or is the opportunity for independent development so limited to a select few that the better option is to give it up and become a blue-collar worker in Japan or in other countries? )

Chinese middle class cannot buy house, cannot mary, and most certainly cannot travel often. Housing in big cities where middle class lives is typically worth 30+ years of income (order of millions of CNY). Marriage costs hundreds of thousands of CNY because of 彩礼. And we don't have two day weekends, and need holidays to rest. Those holidays also erode weekends, too (调休). You simply do not get the energy to travel. All you get is income that may be randomly taken away by some mishap in regulations.

As for me, I choose to emigrate because of the heavy workload, competitive atmosphere and the office politics in Chinese workplace. Freedom and democracy is too distant for most Chinese, and most of them never think about it. Just as you said:

Political freedom doesn't mean much if you're starving. I'd rather have a house, a car, and one or two vacations a year than political freedom
